The trio seek advice from Reginald "Skull" Skulinski, a strange video game addict working in a pizza parlor who is claimed to be an expert on the supernatural. They learn that the house is a "domus mactabilis" (Latin for "deadly home"); a monstrous being created when a human soul merges with a structure. They conclude that the heart must be the furnace, as DJ realizes that the chimney has been smoking since Nebbercracker died. For kids of the ’90s, the imagery and storytelling of Monster House provoke memories of summertime reads of R.L. There was even homage to many Stephen King stories including his Dark Tower series, The Wastelands. Amusing enough, while Chowder is in the basement of the house, his flashlight highlights a mechanical monkey similar to the one in King’s short story The Monkey.
Jenny Bennett

Constance Nebbercracker is a cruel woman and she doesn't like kids very much. This is due to her unfortunate past when she used to be circus performer, due to her obese appearance, she was often bullied and ridiculed which ultimately lead to her cruel personality. It only became worse when she was buried in cement when threatening, causing her to become more vengeful than ever and will attack anyone that comes near. Despite this, the only person she ever truly loved was her own husband, "Horace Nebbercracker", though this would all end when her Husband attempted to blow her up with the dynamite.

Before they could drive away, however, the house makes a groaning sound to lure the two cops closer. Oblivious to what has lured them, the two officers decided to investigate the house against the kids’ wishes. Officer Landers notices that something seems not right as the other one is suddenly driven away by the tree’s roots. Officer Lister taunts the tree, which suddenly, prompts it to move and grab his leg. Things then suddenly became worse as the house attacks them and devours Officer Landers alive while sadistically playing with Officer Lister whom it grabbed via branches before eventually tossing him into its mouth. The plot centers around three children who discover that a house in the neighborhood has become possessed by a ghost, turning the building into a living, breathing, scary monster.

As the trio went home, DJ believes that the possession of the house started from when the furnace inside the house was set alight, confirming that the furnace was the house's heart. Unfortunately, Officers Lister and Landers interfere, and upon seeing the medicine that they used to render the house asleep, they wrongfully arrest the kids. For a brief moment, they are distracted by a beautiful girl named Jenny Bennett, who, much to their horror, approaches the house. Just then, Constance, whom already set her sights on Jenny, possesses the stone walkway squares causing the pipes below her to rise and led her to her mouth, only to be foiled by Zee and the boys' interference and only getting Jenny's wagon and chocolates.
Just then, the house moves again and taunts Chowder by bouncing his basketball in the doorway that was then marked with a Jack-O-Lantern's face, which Chowder perceives that the house would start the real killing spree tonight. The three then witness the house consuming a dog, making them realize the house waits for its prey to get close enough before devouring it. Calling the police, the youthful trio approach the house, thinking about the carnage waiting to happen that evening. The house tries to tempt Chowder with his basketball, but DJ and Jenny stop him from taking the bait. It is then that the cops show up; DJ, Chowder, and Jenny attempt to tell them about the nature of the house.
Chowder engages the house in battle once more, while DJ and Jenny ascend a nearby crane, however, this time, Constance gets the upper hand and rips the excavator’s backhoe off with her larger mouth before eating the excavator. With his only weapon capable of fending off the house gone, a defenseless Chowder is forced to flee. Above them, DJ and Jenny get the dynamite lit; DJ then swings on the crane, narrowly missing the misshapen House's attack and throws the dynamite down the chimney and into the furnace, blowing up the house.
Mr. Nebbercracker, appears to be mean and heartless to anyone on his lawn, but only because he is afraid his house will attack the person. He is most likely in his sixties or seventies, as he's pretty slow on his feet. His ongoing protection of children from Constance throughout the years without revealing what his house really is has made him an unsung hero. He is a former army member, DJ’s neighbor from across the street, and the husband of Constance, whose vengeful spirit has possessed his house, forcing him to chase people away from his house so they won’t get hurt. Horace is happy that both she and him are finally free from their torment, and proceeds to return all the toys he had taken back to the children of the neighborhood. In the end, all the house's victims are revealed to be alive as well as they crawl out of the house's foundations.
As he carries the tricycle back to his house, he notices DJ spying on him from his bedroom window. When DJ attempts to retrieve his best friend Chowder's basketball from his lawn, he is caught by Nebbercracker, and after accidentally damaging his lawn, Nebbercracker furiously grabs DJ, and lifts him off the ground and yells at him. DJ's weight causes Nebbercracker's bones to crack, and at the same time, he suffers a heart attack, causing him to faint on top of DJ. The house then finds out they are inside, and attacks them, but they escape by attacking its uvula. The trio then realizes that it was Constance's spirit that was controlling the house the whole time. DJ lives across the street from Mr. Nebbercracker, a grumpy old man who takes and keeps anything that lands on his lawn.
Chowder, DJ's best friend, accidentally loses his new basketball in Nebbercracker's yard. The old man flies into a fierce rage, yelling at the boy before collapsing, seeming to have suffered a heart attack, and being taken away in an ambulance. In the evening, DJ gets phone calls from Nebbercracker's house, even though nobody is there.
